You Know Exactly What This Is About

You know what’s coming. This is all about that one girl who hunts stuff: Kendall Jones.

I’m not one who likes to jump into the middle of a social media debate like this one, but I haven’t paid a visit to the ole blogosphere in a while and needed to do a little somethin somethin.

Let’s start off with some honesty

I have done little to no research on this topic. I wasn’t even sure what Kendall’s name was until I actually had to type it out moments ago. Actually, the initial plan for this post was to make up a new name for her every time I would have referred to her. But that seemed a little insensitive because she’s an actual person with actual feelings and stuff, imagine that.

Most of my commentary will stem from the quick little snipits of information that I have received from the titles of articles and one short video that I watched. Now that I’ve cleared the air, here is my definitive stance on Kendall and her African adventures.

This is Kendall Jones

Texas Tech cheerleader by day, target of the internet by day as well.

Yup that’s her alright. She goes on African safaris and hunts animals. Some of these animals are endangered others are not. Some of them are very old and near the end of their life, while others are not so much. I could go on and on about this, but you can do a quick google search and find out everything you want about her pretty quickly. Actually if you give it five minutes one of your Facebook friends will probably do all the work for you.

Tons of people have weighed in on the Kendall Jones discussion. Some people want her banned from Facebook because they don’t like the content that she’s posting. Which is really strange because if you aren’t friends with Kendall then you won’t see any pictures of dead animals because of her privacy settings. Some people want to hold a parade in her honor which is also kind of strange because she’s only 19. She’s received death threats and supporting fan pages, hate and love. And after seeing her name over and over and over again, I decided to sit down and really contemplate how I truly felt about the situation. After careful consideration I went to twitter and fully fleshed out my thoughts.

I understand why people are upset on all sides. The animal activists don’t like when animals are attacked. The hunters don’t like when hunting is attacked. Texans don’t like when one of their own is attacked. The fashionistas don’t like camo. And Josh doesn’t like it when America loses to Belgium.

From what I understand (mind you I only have a very basic understanding, see tweet for explanation) Kendall is doing nothing illegal. The morality of her actions is very much up for debate, but she goes on very expensive safaris and only hunts animals that she has been given permission to hunt. The animals that she kills are sometimes used for research or given to a town for food.

The other thing to keep in mind  is that she’s 19 years old, and just completed her Freshman year (sophomore by hours) of college. Give her a break. If I was publicly chastised for the stuff I did as a freshman it would have torn me up:

“Local Texas Tech freshman can’t figure out that his goatee does him no favors.”

“This 19 year old male still posts those ‘tag your friends’ pictures for some reason”

“That one guy who won’t shut up about Frozen is back and you won’t believe what idiotic thing he did now”

I don’t know how I would have handled all the negativity.

Now I’ve never met Kendall and I have no idea what she’s like, but she’s probably a bit more tough than I am. She shoots guns and goes on hunting trips while I’ve never shot anything in my life and I still cry during The Lion King. But your questions about my own masculinity aside, remember you are dealing with an actual person with actual feelings and stuff (imagine that). And though she might be tougher than I am, wave after wave of hatred cannot be fun for her.

Dealing With The Internet Mob

He doesn’t like the things I like. LET’S GET HIM

Sometimes being on the internet kind of feels like hanging out with a mob that is looking for something to be really really irrationally upset about. Unfortunately they seemed to have found Kendall. In an attempt to redirect, repurpose, and possibly eliminate this anger, I have singled out the three most prevalent factions in this current internet war and have given each of them an alternative course of action.

  • If you are outraged at what Kendall has done:
Direct your anger at the rules that she followed. She did not step outside the line or break any regulations. She did exactly what she was told to do. So instead of signing a petition to ban a 19 year old girl from Facebook why don’t you try signing petitions to change the safari hunting… laws? rules? Whatever it is they’re called. Even better, you can simply never accept a friend request from ole Kendall and virtually achieve the exact same thing that your petition is attempting to accomplish.
  • If you are furious at the people who are outraged at what Kendall has done:
You need to take a few deep breaths and find something more productive than engaging in senseless internet debate. Nobody wins those except for the people who screen shot them and post them on Reddit. Instead do something that encourages Kendall without taking shots at your opposition. You cannot defeat hatred by being more hate-y. It simply doesn’t work like that. Stop fighting on Kendall’s behalf and instead send her some good vibes. Show her a funny video like the one of the polite bear who waves at people. Actually, I’ll go ahead and give you the link for that one.
  • Finally, if you are someone who just needs to be mad at something:
I suggest watching a little film called Transformers: Age of Extinction because… my goodness. There are just no words for that movie. It’s horrendous. An insult to human intelligence, film in general, dinosaurs, and Tim Howard.

Don’t fall into the mob mentality one way or the other. Remember that you are dealing with a young woman who was just graduating high school this time last year. And If all else fails, go watch Transformers and boo the entire time.

Good reminder. I think it’s scandalous – what’s she’s doing. Yet, I find the mob even MORE scandalous. Why do we rush so quickly to “let’s kill her!” I mean, goodness. PS all of my 19-year-old headlines would read “dumbass college freshman drinks too much tequila and has ill-advised unprotected sex. Is she pregnant? News at 11!” (the answer was no, every time, thank goodness. And it was before the HIV epidemic so I’m dating myself.)

No matter which side of the fence we are on, we’ve all been manipulated into caring about this so that she can gain notoriety. She has been very successful in making a name for herself with a view to landing a TV career. Apparently, she is a savvy communicator.

What mainly upsets me about this situation is facebook’s (not) handling of it. As you are probably aware, they removed a pic of a baby’s bottom in a Coppertone-ad style pose, but they did not remove this chick’s pics of her smiling over dead wild animals. Neither is illegal, but I find the latter much more offensive.

    • gigimalvira · July 8, 2014

That’s true lately Facebook has been messing with people’s heads. They have taken away pictures whenever anybody complains, now hundreds of people have complained about those pictures and they won’t take them off. This must be another of Facebook’s experiments.

      • mcbarlow5 · July 8, 2014

Hm, you may be right about that..

    That bear is really funny.

  5. V · July 8, 2014

I agree, be angry at the laws that allow this to happen instead of sending her death threats. Her cutesy pictures with their carcasses and ploy to turn this into a reality show do not make her the most sympathetic character, but she is not the first nor last person to spend exorbitant amounts of money to do this.

  6. gigimalvira · July 8, 2014

I love animals, I don’t wear fur or any other type of clothing made by animals, I’m also a vegetarian. And even though I find outrageous what this girl did and completely disgusting I still have to keep in mind that she’s only 19, and even though those pictures and what she did is completely revolting what bothers me the most is how the people reacted; instead of using a more peaceful approach the mobs turn into rage, anger, vengeance, and that’s not right either. What she did is awful and I hope she gets punished in some way so she won’t do this again… but sending death threats is going overboard.

Everybody should just do themselves a favor, and get off Facebook! I mean, I realize suggesting such a thing is insane, but… since I got off Facebook, all of my friends seem smarter, and less angry-about-everything-that-actually-doesn’t-affect-them-at-all. Plus more study time. Try it, people!

P.S. Wonderful conclusion. Transformers IS something to be angry about. Haha!

I say that she has the right to do what she wants. If she isn’t breaking any laws, then you go girl. I know one thing, there aint no way in hell I would hunting lions, tigers, and bears. I guess some one has to do it. I hope she stays safe and wish the best for her. people should definitely take a breather, or just shut the hell up.

Informative, funny, open-minded, thanks……..Ill just go and cancel that download of Transformers – Age of Extinction.

  12. Tempest Rose · July 8, 2014

She has a personal Facebook, and then a public Facebook page. The page is not private, I was able to see everything. Not saying I disagree with you, just wanted to point that out.

I think many people mean well — they want to educate and learn and try to get through to her that maybe there are better things for her to be doing. (She says one of the main reasons she is allowed to hunt many of the animals is because they are causing trouble for the people in nearby towns. Couldn’t they relocate the animal?) Then again, the only knowledge I have is what I read here and on her Facebook, so I could be wrong.

Back to the meaning well thing — I think it’s hard for people to realize someone’s age via the internet. 19 is considered an adult, so they simply view her as an adult. I sure did some horrendous things when I was 19. And 12, for that matter. But I would have understood if people were concerned and simply wanted to help guide me. The interwebz people just aren’t good at conveying that concern.

  16. Life in Technicolor · July 9, 2014

Thanks for the reminder that this really isn’t worth the energy people are expending on their anger (nothing personal to her)…like you, I’d add her to the list of things I could care less about if I cared enough to bother! Honestly, aren’t there enough larger issues to be mad about than one 19 year old girl and how she spends her time or money (Nope, haven’t even paid as much attention as you so I’m sure I’ll piss someone off for saying it!).

    Congrats on Freshly Pressed!

  17. tfbspider · July 9, 2014

I am really glad that she followed all the rules and laws. I as a hunter get mad when people exploit the sport or make it look like a stupid redneck cruel game. (Duck Dynasty) I personally do not kill other predators like Lions. I just do not see the point in hunting other hunters, but if others want to do it just follow the rules and not ruin it for the rest of us.

  18. creativeconfessions · July 9, 2014

A funny and open-minded point of view on the subject. Thanks!

  19. fadialawyer · July 9, 2014

Nothing to hate about this post.

  20. Mark · July 9, 2014

I also disagree with the mob mentality that arises in these situations. However your “Don’t be angry at her, be angry at the rules” idea completely ignores the fact that it’s just wrong for someone who has been on this planet for 19 years to think its OK to enjoy taking lives as a hobby.

  21. tenderlytina · July 9, 2014

I agree, it’s quite easy to avoid what we don’t want to see when on the internet and I wish more people would do that.

  22. Izzy1975 · July 9, 2014

So many people complaining about her standing next to dead animals, while they chew their burger during dinner…I see stupid people.

  23. kjtamuser · July 9, 2014

Your comment that being of internet is “Hanging out with a mob that is looking for something to be irrationally upset about.”

Is spot on. Coule also be applied to news networks.

  28. lkrause1997 · July 9, 2014

Excellent post. I’m so tired of people being ‘banned’ because they do something others don’t agree with. She broke NO laws. She did NOTHING illegal. Therefore, this is only a matter of opinion. I would prefer not to see these pictures, so I don’t look at her FB page. Genius right? 😉

  29. karlijn2020 · July 9, 2014

Goed stuk. Ik ben het met jullie allemaal eens. Ik vind het niet kunnen. Ze is nog maar 19. Dan doe je zoiets echt niet.

  30. Jay E. · July 9, 2014

Wonderful piece and congrats on being Freshly Pressed!

I’m one of those people that can’t understand why the majority of people who argue for freedom of choice refuse to accept her choices. You can’t pick and choose!

  31. connorjuelfs · July 9, 2014

People need to stop worrying so much about animals and worry more about other human beings. Humans come first animals come second. For all of you “save the wildlife” people out there, you need to take into consideration, human lives and feelings because that’s far more important than an endangered lady bug in the desert.

  32. ruwengierls · July 10, 2014

Great reflection! It’s actually the first time I’ve seen her face, though I’ve read about her the last couple days.
I can understand both sides. I’m really not opposed to hunting at all. Though I live in Germany now, I spent years in the US where hunting was far more “normal” than it’s over here. Like you said, she ain’t doing nothing illegal, but hunting endangered animals in general feels kinda wrong to me. As much as I like hunting I also like animals, wildife conservancy and so so. I feel like hunting endangered species wouldn’t cause so much controversy if there weren’t so many animals being poached! That’s the real issue to me!
Oh, and don’t mess with Texas
ps. Yeah, dead animals for research! As a biology student I spend most of the time studying dead animals – only certain parts, like field studies are done on live animals…

  33. J.W. McNabb · July 10, 2014

I do find it hilarious that people are getting so outraged about this issue – on either side of it.
To those who are shocked that hunting is still a viable past time for those who pursue it (myself included in that one) – maybe you should take that “shock” and visit your local grocery store, pay a visit to the meat department, and voice your concerns to the nice man who asks you what cut of steak you want today. I am sure he will be just as “shocked” as you are to learn that every one of those steaks used to be a living, breathing, animal!
As for those on the other side who are getting outraged that certain pictures Kendall has shared have been removed, you shouldn’t be surprised. In this time of PC censorship, which is only a socially acceptable means of communication because we have allowed it to happen, this type of censorship is the rule of the day. If it hurts someones feelings, it must be stricken from the record. For those who are familiar with George Orwell’s work, they likely have the feeling that they have seen this all before.

Agreed. Its education that is needed in this world and regarding this topic. Not hatred and anger. I was angered by the images of beautiful animals needlessly slaughtered too, but to send death threats is slightly hypocritical!

‘im not happy that you have killed, therefore i will kill you.’

    Amazing logic.

Learn and spread knowledge. Much more useful than calling her a c*nt.

Liking Ms. Jones hobbies/interest or not, this kind of thing would not be an issue if people, like many of us, would simply stop advertising and promoting everything we do. Society has become a big bucket of branding ourselves. Hey, everyone, look at me. It is considerate when we take a genuine interest in the welfare of others instead of spending our time promoting ourselves. This is exactly what she is doing. There are more important things in life that need our help and attention and these things are right under our own noses. Perhaps, the best policy for this kind of stuff is to simply ignore it and move on. Interesting thing for those who don’t like hunting. For years, one of our local soup kitchens in the city would ask hunters to donate venison, duck, and pork to help feed the homeless. Hunters from as many as 5 counties bring half of there seasons catches already processed and packed for the shelters to use. That is more worthy of a positive story.

  46. Debbie · July 27, 2014

This is strictly my opinion. Yes she is 19 yrs old, smoking hot, and can aim to kill. That is very sexy to some. The reality is that this is hugely backed by a marketing machine. She does what she is told to do, smiles her gorgeous smile and melts hearts of the gun supporters. Maybe even converts some non-supporters. She is looking at having her own show on TV, because she is SO marketable. This is about making money and moving the gun movement forward. Best to ignore her and not give the marketing machine our precious time.
